St Patty's Shamrocks...the real truth....as I see it..

There is nothing like the color green to bring me out of hibernation.. I can't believe I haven't done a tablescape since before Christmas....well, I finally got my tablescaping on.....so, here we go....

There is so much to choose from in our home when the color green is in play..the whole house is decorated around this color and it is my foundation color for most of our dishes...

I decided to go simple.....

ONE shamrock (aka 4-H cloverleaf) and ONE cabbage (St Patrick's Day food of choice).....

Green Ballerina Pottery bowls for potato soup.  The cabbage leaf plates are perfect for holding corned beef and cabbage with cornbread..

The silverplate is a recently acquired huge set from ebay.  The pattern is White Orchid and was my Grandmother Lewis's pattern..so it's both beautiful and familiar to me...

The cabbage tureen and underplate are someone's very good ceramic art from 1972..

small green leather roses on an Irish Linen tablecloth.....

                                                                  the maker of the plates

Vintage green glassware compliments the setting.  We use them everyday and I don't know the maker...

My favorite thing about St Patrick's Day is the food..and then the greenness of it....Everybody wears and decorates with my favorite color..

I can't wait to see how all of you celebrate this day. and what it means to you..

As a side note, I tried my best to buy a little shamrock plant for the table....  I could NOT bring myself to do it..LOL  and here is the reason..  In my part of the country, oxalis is an obnoxious weed that I have heard my grandmother and parents talk about all of my life..how to get RID of it!!!   and now it is a little plant that is popular and is sold at this time of the year under the name of ..you guessed it...Shamrocks...LOL   So, I could not in good conscience pay money for a weed that we have been trying to get rid of for years....But, I tried..I really did...stood in front of them a looooong time at Trader Joe's..then walked away and decided this stained glass one was more my style....
Guess what I found growing in the weeds yesterday while I was weeding!!  yep, oxalis (shamrock)..one person's trash is another person's treasure...thought you  all might need a laugh..and how we interpret things differently.....

Happy St. Patricks Day

Thank you for stopping by..I am excited to be back in the saddle again...

Love, Mona

Y'all come visit too...

  1. Mona, that is hilarious about the oxalis! I think your choices are perfect for your St. Patrick's Day table. That tureen is wonderful, and I also love the cabbage plates. The plates really show off the pretty greens you added to them.

  5. Mona, your small green leather roses are lovely and so unique. The cabbage plates are so fitting as well. I love all the shades of green.

I bought an oxalis for my table but don't plan to plant it in the yard LOL! However, I do have the purple version in my garden and I like it. It's been 10 years now and it hasn't spread much. When it does I will dig it up.

I have a cabbage tureen just like yours that my mother made. I enjoyed your table.

  7. Isn't it wonderful all the shades of green there are! You capture the spirit beautifully. Love those creamy white dishes too- great texture and movement in them. My mother had a cabbage tureen just like that for years- I wonder if it's still around somewhere! Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  11. Hi Mona, your table is so pretty and I love your flatware purchase from Ebay. I did buy a new shamrock plant, like I do every year, but I keep it in a pot outside. It's too funny that it's considered a weed! I love your stained glass shamrock. It's a keeper! Happy St. Patrick's Day to you. xo

  12. Wow, the cabbage leaf plates are simply stunning! And the fat cabbage soup tureen! I love the whites and the contrasting light lime greens rather than the traditional darker greens~gorgeous table!

  13. Your tablescape is wonderful - love the shades of green and the shape of the dishes you've used. "1972 ceramics"??? That cabbage tureen is gorgeous and my first thought was "I want one!" Guess that's not going to happen! Funny story - shamrock plant versus "weed"!

  16. Hello Mona,
I didn't realize you were back to blogging. I haven't heard from you in awhile. What a lovely St. Patrick's Day post. I love that green little glass shamrock. And the green leather roses are sweet. Your table is terrific. I've never seen green glasses like this, they are so pretty.

I have missed you, and I hope you have a fun day wearing all the green.

    love,
    ~Sheri

  17. Mona, I'm right there with you on your feelings about oxalis. It is such a pain in the garden because it's invasive and difficult to get rid of. The only oxalis I allow is one of these sold as a shamrock for in the house. Like you though, I couldn't bring myself to spend the money on one this year. I bought a mini orchid instead to use with my Easter decor.
Love the green details of your table. The cabbage leaf plates are perfect. I'm going to remember that for next year as I have a set in both the green and the white.

  19. Love that little weed!!! That is funny, hadn't heard of that. I've had mine in a little pot for about 2 years.. it's waning. Your table is gorgeous. Are those Kaldun and Bogle plates? I love the soft color. I too have the orchid silverplate. I bought it in memory of my father in law who had the largest orchid greenhouse between Dallas and Hawaii, right here in little ol' Lubbock, Texas. He had even developed a blood red orchid and named it after my mother in law. I just couldn't pass up the silverplate when I saw it at an estate sale.
Your table is gorgeous.. Happy St. Paddy's day to you and yours.. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face,

  21. Hello - I popped over here from BNOTP and really like your simple tablescape. Not to criticize anyone, but I saw a table with 8 layers of plate/bowls at each setting - oh my!! I guess I am just too practical. Can I see across the table? Would I really use each of those plates? Ha! Thank you for sharing yours. OH, and I love that flatware. I have two serving pieces of that pattern.

  22. I love the white plates Mona. I read somewhere that if you have four leaf clovers your soil ph is off. Now I do not test my ph and I do not have clover. Like you I will not be buying any either.

  23. Very pretty tablescape and lovely header, too. My husband's favorite color is green as is my sister's and daughter-in-law's. It makes for a calming tableau. Interesting about the oxalis...guess I need none of that. It took me long enough to get rid of the Lilies of the Valley.

  24. Oh my on the shamrock! I struggle to keep mine alive. It wouldn't survive the winter outside. Then I read Vee's hate of Lily of the Valley. I love them, but yes, plant them where they can run amok!
Love your cabbage table, and that tureen is excellent! The whole table sings to my Irish heart!
Thanks so much for taking part in the 6th annual St. Pat's Bog Crawl! Slainte'!

  26. Those are just GORGEOUS photos in your header!!! So soothing! I love the color of your dishes here, too. They are the most luscious color of green!!!

The tureen is wonderful! 1972, huh? It is in terrific shape for it's age...unlike me! :-)

It's funny how one man's flower is another man's weed!

    Enjoy your St. Patrick's Day!!!

  27. Oh Yes, please do a post about your Barbie and Midge! My sister (her name's Mona too) had Barbie's sister growing up, and we both forgot the name of it. She doesn't have her any more, but I kept onto mine. My barbie's head is coming loose and her hair is all matted, but she is still a treasure to me.

    Have a sweet day, Mona.

    love,
    ~Sheri
