The REAL October

I am reposting one of my favorite blogs about October and the golden light..  I hope you enjoy it...

I have put off expressing my opinion about the month of October but I just cannot stand it any longer.  LOL  and if you are easily offended, then just stop right now and come back next time when I will be less controversial....

I LOVE, LOVE the month of October...it is a beautiful month..the changing of seasons..the turning of the leaves..the beginnings of all things cozy in our homes..usually the first fire in the fireplace..
.and it is the month when I met my true love....

The earth takes on a kind of golden color all around...

Everywhere I look the last few weeks, the world has turned to that horrid shade of orange and black...and filled up everything with scary things and dead things....while all around us for 30 days out of this month, we have so many living and beautiful things to celebrate....the holiday that is ONE day out of this month has overtaken all of blogland.....ok, I know..that is MY opinion...but this is MY blog and I feel like my opinion on this month's holiday has been squshed and pushed aside by all of the hoopla over this holiday that I neither like nor do I celebrate in ANY way at all...

I decided that the best way for me to keep writing a blog and setting a table during this month of October was to set one filled with GOLDEN light and flowers...and pretty pictures...not a single solitary scary or black and dead thing to be seen here...not trying to stir up controversy but simply expressing my opinion while staying true to my convictions.....

These goblets were all taped together in a bundle and dirty, but as you can see they are quite a find..     beautiful, etched with leaves...and golden.  I only bought 5 out of the 13 that were on the shelves at GW...love them..

I found 4 place settings of these amber dishes this week..they are arcoroc France...

There are a lot of things on this table that I should have moved..LOL just don't look at them..This table is real, raw life around here.  I had thought I would just skip the rest of October in blogland..

and.....THEN!!!!

the sunlight hit this table just right this morning and I got my camera and here we are...

My husband said to me at lunch today, you surely do seem to be finding a lot of this amber, golden color lately....I smiled....and thought...THAT'S  my inspiration point....

It is BECAUSE I am looking for it!!!!!  I am looking for this golden light that says October to me...and while everyone seems bent on looking for ugly orange and black, I am racking up at the thrift stores with all of the amber, golden dishes and crystal I am finding..so there is definitely a silver lining here..

I have enough now, so go look for some..there is golden, amber beauty if you look for it!!!!  It speaks of light and life and beauty......

I propose to you that there is a whole lot more to this month than halloween...A WHOLE LOT MORE!

and now I have expressed my opinion and I feel much better..  I have gotten this off my chest...If you have stayed with me til the end..BRAVO!!  thank you.....and I certainly hope you come back again..and that I don't get booted off of the parties I join this week...if I do, I understand..and I will be all pretty and nice next time..  after all, we are in the home stretch for Thanksgiving now.....I can see November from here....

disclaimer...if you do celebrate halloween, that is your right and I am not in any way saying not to do it...I am really just expressing my opinion and how I see things..that is what makes us all unique..we are our own true self..not a copy of someone else...and it is not my intention to offend anyone at all....

Love, Mona

  1. I couldn't agree with you more! I love October but dislike everything associated with the so called "holiday" at the end of the month! I think your idea of celebrating with things golden is a brilliant idea and your table is absolutely beautiful and truly celebrates the golden month of October :)

  2. Mona,

Hear, hear! October is golden light, cherry mums, fiery leaves and bountiful harvests, just to name a few wonderful things about this autumn month! Your table shines with elegance and pretty flowers and amber goblets that grace a sweet and romantic table setting, and a charming elegance. Thanks so much for sharing and expressing your passion for October!

  3. I would love to be sitting at your beautiful table. Writing from my iPad in the car and hopping it will go through. I love your golden post. So happy, cheery and elegant. It is full of life and the glory of autumn. You capture the most happy emotions in your tables apes

  4. Mona, your table is gorgeous!!! I love seeing it in all of its October glory. However, I must confess that Halloween is my favorite holiday!! I love seeing all of the adorable children dressing up and having such fun.
I used to celebrate three times each October, when I taught pre-school and loved, loved every minute of it!!

  5. Mona, this gorgeous table would be perfect for November, too...topaz is it's birthstone! I really like the clear amber dishes, they sparkle like jewels. The flowers are beautiful, too.
I do like orange, but just can't seem to get into it this fall...for me it is purples/plums/aubergine this year!
    Have a wonderful week...

  6. Thank you for the beautiful October posts. Here it is the most beautiful month of the year and yet it is sullied by that kind of decor. That's my two cents. I try not to get too up tight, but if I think about it long enough... Keep the beauty coming!

  7. I love you taking a stand on your position, dear Mona! I love that you used golden, sparkling amber. Your table is just full of love, cheer and good wishes. Thank you for the beauty in your hidden art!! xo

  8. Mona! I want to hug & kiss you! Thank you...I thought it was just me! We celebrate fall at our House not Halloween. I absolutely love all your amber glass. It is so shiny! Your table is tops with me. Glad you stopped by to visit me. I will be back to see your unhallowed tables!

  9. We celebrate Fall in my house too, not Halloween as I don't even have kids, and my g'girls are far away; therefore, they're mother does. I just like the fun of tablescaping, though. Your table and photography is magnificent, I adore Fall colors as I am a Fallen girl from October! I love amber and the dishes and glasses are gorgeous together. Hugs,

  10. I agree, tonight is the first Halloween I did. Fall until Tgiving, which is late this year. Maybe I will start Cmas before Tgiving, oh no! :)
Love your Fall table and the way the light catches the amber glass.
    It's a beautiful table!
So just skip the Halloween tables! :)

  11. Your table is beautiful! I so agree--we are too obsessed with the dark and dreary Halloween. It used to be fun, now it is disgusting.

  12. Love your post Mona! & your beautiful table. Glad to see you give and then stand by your opinion. I recently read that spending on Halloween décor is catching up with Christmas.

I have some vintage amber glass candlesticks and center bowl. They'll be on my table soon!

  13. Oh such glorious color! The lighting in your photos is magnificent.

  16. I totally agree with you. Autumn is a beautiful time of year. Why make it so ugly and depressing. I decorate for fall that way it stays up until after Thanksgiving. So glad I am not the only one who feels this way

  18. Your table is beautiful! And I agree 100% on the Halloween topic. I so love natures beauty this time of year...why do we have to place the emphasis on gross and scary. I would prefer to focus on pumpkins and scarecrows and then call it a day with the Halloween thing....nature does the rest just fine!

  21. Beautiful autumn tablescape.

I totally agree with the opposition to carrying out this black and orange scary stuff so long. Celebrate Halloween the one night, let the kids trick or treat, party and get a little frightened, and be done with it! There is enough scariness in the world without ghouls and witches screaming at you from the store aisles beginning in beautiful summertime and all through the quietness of autumn.

  22. I couldn't agree more! I am not a fan of Halloween at all. I love your golden approach to fall, it's perfect. Dianne

  23. I so agree with you and feel that Halloween is not the same holiday it was when I was growing up. I don't understand the obsession with zombies and sexy maids. Your table is LOVELY and the warmth of the flowers and amber dishes is a pleasure to behold. What is the pattern of the plates that are in your stack? They look so pretty. You've expressed yourself well.

    1. Rosie, The white plates with fruit are Royal Orchard by Noritake and the amber ones are by Arcoroc France..I do not know the pattern name...thank you for asking..

  25. I agree. I have sold all my orange and black things. I did not have much anyways. I much prefer white pumpkins and the knowledge of God providing the harvest. you are the best, love, Terri

p.s. look at all these awesome comments!

  26. I'm not big on Halloween, either. I have done a few tables to share on my blog, but only for the readers who want ideas on fun tables. I don't do ANY Halloween decorating around here. I also don't hand out candy. That might make me a Scrooge, but I'm just being practical. That's the one night out of the year that people have masks on all over the place and cannot be identified. The doorbell rings, there are people with masks on when you open the door. NOT a good situation from where I sit! We live in a very nice neighborhood, but thieves have gotten hip to going to the houses where people actually have something worth stealing to rob them! I'm not fallin' for that!!! I also have a beef with fireworks on the 4th of July and New Year's Eve. Gunshots? Fireworks? Who knows for sure? Not tryin' to get up in the middle of that milieu!!! :-)

Your amber setting is beautiful! Enjoy it!

  27. Hello,
Not much Halloween celebration in Sweden either and at D´Box too. I have some pumpkins, black and orange plates but not to the extend Halloween thing-y.

I love all your treasures. Very pretty.

  28. Hi, Mona1 Your sunlit tablesetting shines so brightly! It looks similar to my dining room tablescape. I love all the amber yellow....I do like the bright orange color of blooming mums, pumpkins, and maple leaves in the fall, too, though! If you'd like to, check out my post I don't think anything there will offend you, as I don't like dark, scary decor, either!

  29. While I'm getting excited about my very dark post for next week, I appreciate that not everyone loves Halloween, including my husband. Your amber glass is stunning and the way the light hit your tablescape made this post one not to be missed. Beautiful!

  30. I couldn't agree with you more. I don't do Halloween and then they have the stores stuffed with Christmas already. Unreal.

Such a beautiful tablescape, I love the flowers and the amber dishes are stunning. I would love for you to link up to my Inspire Me party that goes live Monday afternoon at 2:30 PT. www.astrollthrulife.net Hope to see you there. Hugs, Marty

  31. Hi Mona, I am your newest follower. I was so attracted to the lovely tablescape - it's just gorgeous.
I understand what you are saying about Halloween. The dark side that it has become over the last 40 to 50 years. But the truth be told I love Halloween, but as the Halloween I knew when I was a child. I love bonfires, pumpkins lit with candles (that would be Jack-o-lanterns), rides in the country to pick apples to make candy apples, the sweet costumes my mother would make for us (I was always a princess), I loved to collect leaves in the park to take to school and glue on paper to give to my mother, I loved dunking for apples, and most of all I loved the tradition of Trick-or-treating. Yes I love Halloween and I love autumn.

But for now, what I really like is your lovely tablescape. The amber glass is gorgeous. The amber stem wear is perfect for this soft golden table. I need six amber salad plates to complete a Christmas tablescape (sorry ladies a girl has got to think ahead) and I am having a dickens of a time finding them.

    Have a Wonderful weekend..... Candy

  32. I too agree. October is about fall and all it's glory, not the dark side of Halloween. We don't decorate for or celebrate Halloween at our house either. There are more of us than we know. Thanks for speaking out.

  36. Here in Maine we have all been commenting on what an incredibly beautiful month October has been, however, it is changing fast as the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop a little each day.

  37. Love your "golden" photos. I don't like the dark scary things of October. I would rather look at all the pretty fall colors in nature.

  38. Your daisies and dahlias are perfect with the amber. I have an amber party tray. I am going to have to rethink it.

  39. I'm with you. October IS beautiful and your lovely tablescape proves it.

  40. Mona, Your amber tablescape is breathtaking! The golden tones are so warm and the sunlight was hitting it just right! Beautiful photos! I am right there with you too. I probably love the fall season the best...with the rich, warm colors and vibrancy. Halloween is a different monster (pub intended) than it used to be when I was a kid growing up. I totally agree with you...it has taken over this beautiful season and it is kind of sad. What was once just a one night of fun and children getting candy has turned into an obsession to many. I don't decorate for Halloween in any way at my house either. This is not about being self-righteous in any way...just my own personal preference. Thank you for being bold enough to post your heart and I will say that it looks like you are in good company by the positive comments you have received!

Blessings! Going to click the "follow me" button now..... :)

  44. Beautiful table! I don't do a lot of Halloween decorations but I do have few I like. I think this is the first year for some fun Halloween times with my Grandson. My daughter and son-in-law celebrate in a fun way. I do love the colors of Fall and it's inspiring to me.

  45. What a beautiful fall table, the ambers always bring a warmth to the month like no other. If you will go to your outside porch, look to the highest left upper corner, there sits the most wonderful creature, I met on my last visit.
The beauty that creature created had me captured for hours, lost in the design of it's fall home.
    I enjoyed your blog, thanks!
